 Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

In 2015 two Educational Institutes will take place in Egypt in March and July 2015 involving faculty from Egyptian academic and research institutions with a significant 3interest in the safe and ethical practice of life sciences research. At these Educational Institutes, faculty with research portfolios and/or teaching responsibilities will collaborate with subject matter experts as well as experts in methods for effective teaching and learning. The model for this project was established at two regional Middle East/North Africa (MENA) Institutes led by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences as well as the National Academies Summer Institutes on Undergraduate Education (
Egyptian academicians and scientistswill be among the facilitators and experts leading the two Institutes in Egypt on the responsible conduct of Science. During these institutes, curricular materials that facilitate education about dual use issues and responsible science will be developed by the attending participants and will be subsequently used by them for teaching within their home institutions. The institutes are part of a continuing program, to train scientists in the MENA region to use active learning pedagogicaltechniques in teaching about responsible science and research with dual use potential. Over the last decades life sciences have greatly contributed to health, economic development and the environment globally. To ensure these continuing advances scientists must be aware of and responsive to the potential that science might be misused to cause deliberate harm. The report of the first institute “Developing Capacities for Teaching Responsible Science in the MENARegion: Refashioning Scientific Dialogue” and the accompanying summary in English andArabic.
